How to Overcome the Internal Mental Health Stigma

According to Harvard Medical School, nearly one in four people globally struggle with their mental health. This shows just how vital mental health services are. Unfortunately, internal stigmas about mental health still exist, even in the most progressive countries. Thankfully, there are things we can do to overcome the internal mental health stigma. Here are some of the ways you can start tearing down this internal barrier.

Know Asking For Help Is Not Weakness

Many people are often hesitant to seek mental health services because they believe it is a sign of weakness. This couldn’t be farther from the truth; getting help for mental health issues is actually a sign of strength. It takes courage to face your own struggles, and even more so to reach out and get help. You should never feel ashamed or embarrassed to seek mental health services. They are there to help you and make you feel better.

Think Positively About Mental Health Services

It can also be beneficial to think positively about mental health services in general. Try not to think of them as “therapy” or “medication,” but instead as tools that will allow you to overcome your struggles and become a better version of yourself. It can also be helpful to think about how getting help could make you a better parent, friend, or employee. These positive thoughts will help alleviate any negative feelings or stigma you may have associated with services.

Talk Openly About Mental Health

One of the best ways to break down the internal mental health stigma is by talking openly and honestly about it. Encourage your friends and family members to talk about their own struggles, as well as yours. The more we normalize talking openly about mental health issues, the easier it will be for people to seek out help without feeling ashamed.

Educate Yourself On Treatment Options

In order to combat the internal stigma, it is important to educate yourself about available treatment options. There are many different types of treatments for mental health issues, and what works for one person may not work for another. It’s important to do your research and find out which option best suits your individual needs. Learning more about mental health services can also help you see them in a more positive light.

These are just some of the ways you can break down those internal stigmas. For more helpful information or to get started with our mental health services, give us a call today!
