Mood Disorders

How to Recognize the Symptoms of Mood Disorders

When you or a loved one are not feeling like yourself, it can be difficult to determine whether what you are experiencing is a mood disorder or something else. If symptoms of a mood disorder are present, a mental health service provider can help you determine the cause. As you care for yourself and those you love, here are some symptoms to be aware of that may point to a mood disorder.

Changes in Sleep Patterns

Mood disorders can cause changes in sleep patterns for those affected. This may include difficulty falling or staying asleep, or oversleeping. Different mood disorders will affect sleep in different ways. For example, bipolar disorder may cause the affected person to feel less need for sleep due to increased energy levels. Individuals with depression and anxiety will have different changes in sleep patterns related to these disorders.

New or Increased Physical Complaints

For those with a mood disorder, certain physical symptoms may be present. Headaches, excessive tiredness, and stomachaches can all be symptoms pointing to mood disorders. As with any diagnosis, a trained professional offering mental health services should be consulted for help getting a diagnosis. These professionals can help determine how best to address physical symptoms.

Persistent Changes in Mood

We all experience feelings of sadness or anxiety at times. When these symptoms persist, however, they can affect cognitive functioning and may be signs of a mood disorder. Feeling sad or anxious frequently or continuously, experiencing a sense of hopelessness or inadequacy, and losing interest in things once enjoyed are all symptoms that should be addressed.

If you or someone you love are experiencing these or similar symptoms, they may point to a mood disorder. You may also be experiencing symptoms not listed here. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, symptoms of mental illness are not limited to the ones mentioned here – there may be dozens of potential symptoms. It’s important to consult with a trained professional for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. Help is available for you and those you care about. For high-quality evaluation and care, reach out to Appalachian Counseling and Psychological Services, Inc. Their team of professionals can help you reach a diagnosis and set up a treatment plan.
