4 Common Mood Disorders (and How to Find Treatment)

Mood disorders are complex mental illnesses that cause various symptoms. However, it’s essential to know you’re not alone. Millions of people suffer from mood disorders and mental illness. One in 20 Americans lives with a severe mental illness, such as bipolar disorder, major depression, or schizophrenia, according to The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Psychological testing services can help diagnose mood disorders, and this article can help you learn how to find treatment.

1. Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is one of the more common mood disorders, with about 4.4% of the population worldwide being diagnosed at some point in their lifetime, according to The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Manic and depressive episodes characterize this mood disorder. However, symptoms usually vary depending on the person, so it’s crucial to use psychological testing services for an accurate diagnosis.

2. Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal Affective Disorder, which is called SAD, is pervasive. It’s commonly referred to as seasonal depression. SAD is characterized by periods of depression or symptoms of depression that usually happen during certain seasons. It’s common during winter, and psychological testing services are required for an accurate diagnosis. Once correctly diagnosed, several treatment options can help alleviate symptoms.

3. General Anxiety Disorder

It’s normal for people to feel anxious sometimes. We all tend to worry at times. However, people with Generalized Anxiety Disorder feel nervous often and have a hard time turning off their worrying thoughts or what-if scenarios. This can inhibit them from participating in certain activities and complicate daily functioning. A professional can help determine whether your anxiety is classified as Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

4. Other Common Conditions

There are several other common mood disorders that many people have. For example, Borderline Personality Disorder is pervasive. A disproportionate view of reality marks Schizophrenia. Additionally, Major Depressive Disorder is severe depression and can make it hard to get out of bed in the morning. Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder is becoming increasingly common. Psychological testing services can help you get to the root of your mood disturbances.

Finding the Right Support

Finding support and treatment is essential to ensure you are not alone. Treatment can help alleviate symptoms and increase functioning. A professional can refer you to resources in your area. The first step is psychological testing. Treatment may include medication, psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, or other treatments. It often depends on your symptoms and how they respond to treatment.

Here at Appalachian Counseling and Psychological Services, we specialize in psychological testing. Once testing is complete, you can utilize one of our treatment programs to help get your life back on track. Contact us today to learn more.
